111: The Cost of Your Yes: Burnout and Boundaries ( for busy high-achieving women )

Season #4

Burnout sometimes looks like continuing to perform at work while dropping the ball everywhere else. You are still dependable, still producing and still showing up for everyone who needs you, but you no longer feel connected to yourself.

In this episode of the Modern Mogul Podcast, Marlyne sits down with Bettina J Peets, performing arts coordinator and founder of Adventures for the Soul, for an honest conversation about burnout, boundaries and finding your way back to yourself.

Bettina shares how she realized she was not simply tired. She was disconnected from the people and practices that made her feel alive. Bills were piling up, not because she could not pay them, but because she did not have the energy to check the mailbox.

Her workdays stretched late into the evening, her health changed, and she continued performing for everyone else while running on empty. Together, Marlyne and Bettina explore the cost of always being the capable one, particularly for ambitious Black women who have been taught to be strong, independent, twice as good and endlessly available.

They also discuss what comes after recognizing burnout. Because rest can help you recover, but lasting change requires a different relationship with your time, boundaries, commitments, support system and power.

In this conversation:
• The signs of burnout that can hide behind competence
• Why disconnection and numbness can be as significant as exhaustion
• The cultural conditioning behind the “strong Black woman” identity
• How to examine the real cost of every yes
• Why you are allowed to renegotiate a commitment
• Boundaries as a practical expression of self-love
• Establishing safety and self-trust within yourself
• Creating a personal support team that expands your capacity
• Moving from burnout recovery into a sustainable operating rhythm
• Why the goal is not to stop achieving, but to stop making self-neglect part of the strategy

Bettina began sharing her recovery publicly and is expanding the Adventures for the Soul community through restorative experiences, quarterly retreats, Sunday Reset yoga and a burnout recovery journal.

The Modern Mogul takeaway: Awareness is the beginning. The next step is building the structure, support and capacity to lead, earn and make an impact without returning to the same operating system that depleted you.
